There are three common kinds of modified PC plastics: toughened PC, flame-retardant PC and glass fiber reinforced PC. However, these types can be further subdivided. Their characteristics and common application fields are different. This article will share these information with you.

Toughened PC

Toughened PC is mainly divided into ordinary-grade toughened PC and high-fluidity toughened PC. Ordinary-grade toughened PC materials can be used in thin-walled products, auto parts, mobile phones and other electronic and electrical products; while high-fluidity PC can be used in ultra-high-fluidity products. Thin-walled parts, such as flat back cover (0.4mm).

1. General-purpose toughened PC

It has good impact resistance, adjustable impact performance, small molding shrinkage, dimensional stability, good weather resistance, high low-temperature impact, and can be sprayed, so it can be used in electronic and electrical products such as mobile phone casings, thin-walled products, and auto parts.

2. High fluidity toughened PC

It has the characteristics of good toughness, wide operating temperature, sprayability, resistance to stress cracking, high injection yield, high flow, and suitable for point-intersection injection molding. It is mainly used for ultra-thin wall products, auto parts, etc.

Flame retardant PC

Flame-retardant polycarbonate has excellent mechanical properties, high heat distortion temperature, high dielectric strength, good electrical insulation, and good flame-retardant effect. Therefore, it can be widely used in high-end chargers, lamp holders, switch panels and other products.

The main features of flame retardant PC materials:

Flame retardant performance: reaches UL94V0/1.5mm;
Falling ball impact: Impacted by a 1.3m/500g steel ball free falling;
Ultrasonic welding: Welding can pass the free drop test;
Environmental performance: can meet industry regulations such as ROHS, halogen-free, and Reach;
High heat resistance: The heat distortion temperature (1.82MPa/3.20mm) reaches 127℃.

Glass fiber reinforced PC

Common glass fiber reinforced PC materials include PC+10% and PC+20%. The former is mainly used in mobile phone middle frames; the latter is mainly used in mobile phone middle frames, tablet computers, and steel-free inserts.

1. Characteristics of PC+10%GF material:

Excellent impact performance and good toughness; excellent heat resistance and not prone to thermal deformation; less floating fibers on the surface and uniform glass fiber distribution; good spraying performance and low injection failure rate.

2. Characteristics of PC+20%GF material:

Good fluidity and high rigidity; less floating fibers and good chemical resistance; low fuel injection rate.
