Mondi cooperates with Scan Sverige to develop PP single material packaging, which is conducive to plastic recycling

Mondi, an expert in sustainable packaging and paper, has collaborated with Scan Sverige to create a PP single-material packaging that is designed for #recycling.  HKScan Scotland has more than a century of experience in Swedish food production. Since March 2024, it has cooperated with Mondi to provide WalletPack for its Pärson brand of sliced ham, salami and plant-based product lines.

Mondi's WalletPack is a PP-based solution designed for recyclability.

WalletPack can contribute to the circular economy by effectively sorting through Site Zero, Europe's largest and most advanced #plastic recycling facility in Sweden. It replaces the previous packaging, which is a non-recyclable multi-layer material packaging made of a combination of PET-PE and PA-PE.

Mondi's WalletPack has a top and bottom film, and its stripping mechanism is said to ensure consumer convenience.It has high oxygen resistance and protection, can extend the shelf life, and combined with internal printing, it also has good printing suitability, and can convey brand and product information.

Helen Brenell, Nordic regional sales of consumer goods in Mondi's flexible packaging business, commented: "Throughout the trial process, we have focused on the same clear goal-to best protect food, while developing packaging that can be viewed from the perspective of sustainable development and designed for #recycling.”

NPA material expert Ainal Alstrom explained: “Multi-layer composite materials such as PET/PE and PA/PE are usually used in various soft plastic packaging, which limits the potential of material recycling.In order to enhance and promote more efficient material recycling, it is necessary to shift to the use of a single material in plastic packaging.It is encouraging that Scan Sverige has cooperated with Mondi to launch a novel packaging solution for Pärsons.This alternative not only replaces traditional multi-layer composite materials, but has also proved to be more conducive to #plastic recycling.

Scan Sverige and Mondi initiated a discussion about the recently launched single-material packaging two years ago.Clear goals were set from the beginning, and the two organizations worked closely together throughout the process to efficiently and thoroughly develop the WalletPack solution for Pärsons.

Eva Tidman, category manager of Scan Sverige, concluded: "We know that Mondi is the right partner to achieve our goals, and we are very happy to see the new solution run efficiently on our existing machines.Our goal is to follow a forward-looking approach to packaging sustainability. We are investing in achieving 100% recyclable packaging by the end of 2025 and working hard to switch to a single recyclable material.”
